What Past and Present Life Choices Cause Chronic Pain?
This post answers questions for The Council from a reader who goes by the name, InDespair, who says The Council mentions (in a different post) that we choose chronic pain to heal our beliefs from past lives that we’ve chosen to bring into our current lifetime. And InDespair asks, “What beliefs from a past life or lives would cause us to choose enduring chronic pain in our current life.”
The Council begins by saying that chronic pain isn’t always brought in from another lifetime. Sometimes it’s just an experience that’s wanted in your current life.
In another lifetime perhaps you’ve seen someone suffering and didn’t understand it, or didn’t show compassion and help the person who was experiencing it. You may choose to experience this chronic pain in this lifetime so you have more understanding of it, and going forward in this life and future lives, you’ll bring more love to any situation where suffering is involved.
Many people suffer sometimes and they wonder why, and question what they’ve done to deserve this suffering. The Council says they’ve come into this lifetime to have the people around them learn patience and compassion and to understand what you are going through. This pain is chosen to help another soul or family of souls learn from your suffering.
The choice to go through extreme pain, hardships, or anything difficult is always the choice of the individual. Each person planning their reality in spirit will plan what they desire to experience, or they’ll experience something to help another soul go through suffering and have more understanding of it. The experience of suffering is never something that’s forced on an individual.
Some people choose suffering to learn patience and love and to have some understanding of this experience. Many souls choose suffering to teach others, and there’s still learning on your part as you go through this. Is there a wish to turn the suffering around and heal it?
Perhaps you’ve agreed with other spirits that want to learn about someone going through pain and suffering, and you’ll tell them that you’ll go through this suffering for them. And they’ll learn from this to give you such love and understanding that you’ll have the strength and understanding to turn the suffering around and realize that love conquers everything.
The Council says you could’ve experienced pain in a prior life and didn’t know how to change it and make it better. And you wish to go through this pain in your current life to try and change it this time around. Sometimes in other lifetimes the others around you had this pain and you didn’t understand it or didn’t have patience for it. And so you want to experience this pain in your current lifetime to bring in more love and understanding about this.
The Council says it’s up to the individual whether they choose to heal this pain they’ve chosen. Many times a person will heal this pain when the spirit of another person has learned what it needs to learn from this suffering.
Bob asked The Council what’s in it for the person who chooses to experience chronic pain their whole life so others can have the experience of this. The Council says you are showing love to others by helping them experience what they need to learn and grow. In spirit when someone wishes to learn about suffering, and someone volunteers to go through this so others can experience it, it’s because we all love one another. You volunteer to go through this out of love for these people, even if this love isn’t conscious on a human level. And there’s always spiritual growth involved, even if the person going through the suffering isn’t aware of this growth at the time they’re experiencing it.
The Council say sometimes the person going through suffering becomes wiser about being a spirit in a physical body, having choices, and having the power to create in your life what’s necessary for you to also grow. It’s always a two-way street. Everyone learns from the experience of suffering. That’s the plan.

Since the blog is currently a project we do in our spare time it can take a while for us to do a session with The Council on a question and then publish a post on the session. Depending on the question and the session it can sometimes take weeks after a question is asked to publish a post with The Council’s answer. Please be patient.
The Council
Cynthia is able to communicate with a group of five non-physical spirit guides in a manner similar to the way Esther Hicks communicates with and speaks for the spirit guides, Abraham, and Jane Roberts communicated and spoke for the spirit guide, Seth. I (Bob) basically interview The Council as they speak through Cynthia during what we refer to as a session. Sessions generally last 5-15 minutes and are usually audio recorded. During the session Cynthia is aware of what The Council is saying and she also receives visual impressions and other types of telepathic communication from them.
The Council’s Basic Guidance
Since we began these sessions with The Council around 2009 they consistently emphasize a few basic ideas that we attempt to summarize here:
1) You are an eternal spiritual being in a physical body.
You are the energy and vibration of continuously expanding love, intelligence, and joy.
Your physical experience in your physical body and your psychological experience of your personality is a small part of the totality of who you truly are.
Let yourself imagine from time to time what it might feel like to experience more of the wondrous totality of who you really are, and don’t be surprised if you are able to experience this more often.
2) You are the creator of all that you experience.
As you open to the possibility your true nature is greater than you ordinarily perceive, it becomes easier to consider the possibility that this expanded you is truly the creator of everything that you experience.
If you’re used to thinking of yourself in a more limited sense, the idea that you are the creator of your experience may be difficult to understand. Our post, What About This Idea That We Create Whatever We Desire, offers insights into this idea.
3) You are here to expand the love you are into physical reality.
You chose, as a spiritual being, to come into this physical reality to experience the joy of expanding the love you are as a spiritual being, into this physical reality. This is your purpose for being here.
Finding Your Way Around the Blog
Home Page
The left-hand column on the Home page contain a long chronological series of posts with the most recent on top. Each post begins with a title. Clicking on a post title will take you to a blog page dedicated to that particular post. Following each post is a Like button where you can indicate to us and other readers if you like the post.
The footer section of each post identifies the date the post was published, the Categories the post has been assigned to, the keyword/keyphrase Tags assigned to the post, and a Comment link. If readers comments on a post, the Comments link will indicate the number of comments. If a post has no comments yet, the Comment link text appears as “Leave a Comment”.
Clicking on the Comments link takes you to a Comment text box on a post page dedicated to that post. Here you can type a comment in the text box and click the Post Comment button to have your comment displayed just below the text box. If you are replying to someone else’s comment, your comment will appear indented underneath the comment you are replying to.

The right-hand column of most blog pages contains this Welcome message. Below the Welcome message in the right-hand column are some useful features:

Archives: The Archives list indicates the number of posts for each month listed. Clicking on the link for a month will display in the left column of the page a list of the posts published that month.
Categories: This is a list of keywords used to categorize posts. Posts can be included in more than one category, if applicable. Clicking on a category link will display in the left column a list of posts assigned to the category you selected.
Navigation Bar
The Navigation Bar at the top of each page contains a link to the blog Home page and links to the following additional pages:
Welcome: A link that displays this Welcome message in the left column (and the right column). At the bottom of the Welcome message is a Comment box where you can post a general comment about the blog or ask The Council a question.
Questions & Answers: Use this link to display a list of introductions to our longer posts, most of which are responses to reader questions. This is an easy way to check out these more in-depth posts. They are listed in chronological order with the most recent post on top. Clicking on the post title will take you to the page where you can read the complete post.
Contact Us: The Contact Us page contains a contact form similar to the Comment form mentioned above. The difference between the Contact Us form and the Comment forms is that the Contact Us form is a private message to us (Cynthia and Bob). It is not posted on the blog. Comments appear on the post page where the comment is posted. Hi, Dee. Believe it or not, we haven’t spent much time considering that people were accessing our blog exclusively on their mobiles. Something to look into. Thanks for letting us know.
Click on the Menu tab on your mobile and select Welcome. This is our Welcome page and I believe it contains most or all of the information that appears in the right-hand column of pages displayed on a larger format.

Hi, Dee. We’re glad you find our blog interesting. We’ve tried to indicate what we do in the Welcome column on the right side of most pages. If you haven’t read it yet you might want to have a look. Basically Cynthia channels a group of 5 spirit guides we call The Council. These are loving and wise non-physical beings. We believe they come from the star system, Sirius. Anyone can post a question and we’ll try to get an answer and post it. If you prefer to keep your answer private you can pay us $100 for a 1 hour phone session where you get to speak directly to The Council through Cynthia. If you have any more questions, let us know. I am requesting guidance about a situation in my marriage. My husband had an affair 5 years ago but we agreed to try to work through this and stay together as we also have two children to raise. The issue is that the woman whom he had an affair with insists on continued contact with my husband. When he refuses she harasses us and tries ruin our family relationships and threaten our jobs.
What can I do to make this woman leave us alone? It is very difficult to work on my marriage with this woman constantly threatening us. It is like a millstone around my neck always dragging us down. I would greatly appreciate any advice.
I grew up in a very conservative Baptist family. I have been praying a lot because it is what I know to do. My parents did not believe in reincarnation. I was not taught about chakras, vibrations, etc. I have slowly been trying to learn about these things on my own. They seem to make sense to me even though I have never considered myself to be a person with any psychic abilities. I thank you for your website. I have learned much from it although I have a very long ways to go. On your suggestion I have been reading E Squared and this has been very helpful.
Also if it is possible to ask one last question. My husband wants to move but my heart does not seem in it. I do not feel “finished” with living in this house, if it that makes any sense. But I am resistant to change. I have always had an underlying spirit of fear. I do not know if this has anything to do with my resistance to moving or where this feeling of fear comes from. I have tried to conquer it in my life but it is still there underneath it all a lot of times.
