Comparing the Ideas of Abraham-Hicks and Brian Weiss
Feeling conflicted about the message of Brian Weiss’s masters compared to the message of Abraham-Hicks
This post answers some very interesting questions from a reader named, Caroline, who’s been a long-time listener and lover of Abraham-Hicks. Caroline says, There’s really never been a message from Abraham I haven’t greatly resonated with. Recently I’ve become fascinated with the topic of reincarnation and read the book, Many Lives, Many Masters, by Brian Weiss. I feel very conflicted and confused after reading this because the messages of these masters seem to conflict with Abraham’s message in many ways. From Abraham I learned reincarnation exists, but its purpose isn’t to fix your past life mistakes or karma. Abraham says karma doesn’t accumulate and isn’t passed on from lifetime to lifetime.
We come into this reality to experience different beliefs
The Council says, first let’s begin with the two souls who are giving these messages. There’s Brian Weiss, who came into this reality to share this message about karma. This message is perceived as totally different from Abraham’s message. This is because we all come to this reality to learn different things and experience different beliefs. Brian Weiss chose to learn what he did about past lives and to share it. He shares this information for people who need to believe what he’s teaching. Abraham has come through Esther Hicks to share what you’d call a different message for other people who need to learn the way Esther is teaching, and function within those beliefs.
There’s no right and no wrong
It’s not that one of these people is right and the other is wrong. With your beliefs (what you choose to believe) you create in your reality. The people who hear about karma and how you bring it from one life to another, they need this teaching and they’ll experience lessons and learning through this teaching. Abraham says there is no karma and we’re here to have a wonderful time and create. Other souls who are on another level need to learn from that message. There’s no right and no wrong.
Choose the belief that makes sense to you
Learn about these two beliefs and then choose what makes the most sense to you. That’s how this reality is made. It’s made that we come here and have choices for every little thing we do. We have the choice what to believe. We have the choice what path we’ll follow. Many people can be raised one way and they have certain beliefs. As they get older they no longer vibrate with their earlier beliefs and so they change their beliefs. That’s the law of this universe. If Caroline disagrees with Brian Weiss’s message, she can play in her mind with the idea that there are other people who need that belief and she can allow these people to have these beliefs.
Caroline’s Beliefs
Caroline says she learned that the sole purpose of coming to Earth as a human is to have fun creating and sorting through desires and contrast. The Council says this is a wonderful belief for many people.
Freedom of choice is there for you
Caroline says she learned nothing is ever imposed on us, nothing is happening to us, everything is attracted to us through our thoughts and vibration. The Council says everything that happens to us and everything we experience is from our thoughts, our beliefs, and what we planned to experience in this life. No one else comes in and creates for you or tells you, this must be done this way and this must be done that way. The freedom of choice is there for you.
Caroline says, I learned from Abraham we can be, do, or have anything we desire. The Council responds, Of course. And if we want to go without and experience poverty, you have the freedom to do that.
It’s wonderful to be in alignment with your higher self
Caroline says, I learned from Abraham the best and only way you can help someone is to be in alignment with your inner being. I learned you can let yourself off the hook regarding thinking that you need to be helping people because everyone has their own inner guidance system and the best and only way you can help is to be in alignment with your own source. The Council says it’s wonderful to be in alignment with your own source, with your higher self. It’s also wonderful to have positive intentions.
We’re here to help others
You’re not here for the sole purpose of helping yourself. We come here from spirit, which is full of love. We come here bringing that love here and wanting to spread that love in this reality. You can’t do that by only taking care of yourself. You take care of yourself, but you look for others to help, to show compassion, to help them if they’re stuck on some part of their path. We don’t say this is something you have to do, but we’re here to spread the love. We are here to help others, not by forgetting ourselves, but by being in alignment and loving ourselves and sharing that love, compassion, and helpfulness with others.
Being selfish is NOT necessary
Caroline says, I learned from Abraham that being selfish is necessary. The Council emphatically states that being selfish is not necessary. Being selfish isn’t something you think of when you’re in spirit. You didn’t think you’ll come to Earth and only create for yourself. You didn’t think you will come to Earth and be selfish and you will come first and then everyone else will come. This isn’t how we share love.
Quotes from Brian Weiss’s Masters
Caroline says, Here are some quotes from the masters in Brian Weiss’s book. In my opinion, every one of these quotes conflicts with one or all of the statements I made above.
It’s just another path
“People of the religious orders have come closer than any of us to learning the lessons of life because they’ve taken these vows of chastity and obedience. They’ve given up so much without asking for anything in return.” The Council says this is something that people who follow certain religions need to believe. They aren’t closer to being enlightened. They aren’t higher on the rung of learning and moving forward because they’ve given up so much. It’s just another path and that’s the path they’re taking.
It’s not your higher intention to help someone so you can have a reward
Caroline says, “The rest of us continue to ask for rewards, rewards and justifications for our behavior when there are no rewards, rewards that we want. The reward is in doing, but doing without expecting anything, doing unselfishly.” The Council says it’s wonderful to ask for rewards. We believe Abraham called it putting your desires in your vortex. You have every right to want to enhance your life and have rewards. But it’s not your higher self’s intention to help someone so you can have a reward. Your reward will come naturally. The universe will help your reward happen. You’ll help others and you’ll be rewarded. That’s how the universe works. As you’re helpful to others the universe will say, How wonderful. We’ll now help this soul. We’ll show this soul what it feels like to be helped so they’ll continue to help others. We’ll give this person rewards. Whatever they’re thinking they’d like, whatever they’re imagining they can have, the universe will supply that for you.
Caroline says I feel like Abraham would say what I just quoted from Brian Weiss’s masters is such old news. The Council laughs and says it’s just another page in the newspaper.
You don’t come here carrying karma from other lifetimes unless there’s something you desire to experience
Brian Weiss’s masters say you should check your vices before you come to this point. If you don’t, you carry them over with you to another life. Only we can rid ourselves of the bad habits we accumulate when we’re in a physical state. The masters can’t do that for us. If you choose to fight and not to rid yourself, then you’ll carry them over to another life. The Council says this is another belief that many people need. It helps them through fear to learn how to be another person so they don’t carry what they believe they’ve done in other lives. It’s just a belief. You don’t come here carrying karma from other lifetimes unless you want to experience something, as we’d say, the other side of the coin.
It’s your choice
But it’s your choice to experience something you handled one way in one life and you wish to handle another way in your current life. It’s not a punishment. It’s something you choose to bring in and see how the other side feels, or how to do it differently. It’s your choice to go through that. It’s your choice to say: I did it this way. Let me see what would happen if, say, I didn’t turn my back on this person. Let’s see what that would look like. In spirit, very calmly, you plan some of the things you wish to experience. It’s all your choice.
It’s wonderful to ask for more
Caroline says the masters say we must accept what comes to us at a given time and not ask for more. Abraham says asking for more and accumulating desires in your vortex and bringing desires into physical reality is the purpose of life as a human. The Council says when you come here it’s to have a lot of fun, even if it’s stressful or challenging. The fun part is working it out, turning the situation around, and finding another way to experience it. As you’re going through your daily life it’s wonderful to ask for more. It’s wonderful to have desires.
Purpose of a child’s death was not to satisfy anyone’s debt
Caroline says, When speaking about the premature death of Brian Weiss’s infant son the masters say: “Your son’s heart was also important for it was backward, like a chicken’s. He made a great sacrifice for you out of his love. His soul is very advanced. His death satisfied his parents’ debts”. The Council emphatically states that this death did not satisfy anyone’s debt. The parents, the child, everyone agreed to that. It was an experience that was wanted. The purpose of Brian Weiss’s son’s death was to see how, through love, they’d get through it. The child isn’t suffering. The child didn’t have this horrible thing happen to him. The parents aren’t being punished for some karma or something they did in another lifetime. It was an experience of the souls loving each other so much that they’d help each other go through this death.
Many people need to believe there’s karma and debts you have to pay
Bob comments he’s not sure the previous quote is accurate, but he asks The Council if they can explain why the masters may have said what they said. The Council says it’s because there are many people that need to believe there’s karma and debts you have to pay. And usually there’s the belief you have to pay these debts by something horrible happening to you. It’s necessary for those people who need to grow by learning this particular way.
Caroline says: Abraham says over and over that nothing is ever imposed on us, especially something from your previous lives. The Council agrees.
You’ll automatically have people come into your life that match your vibration…
Caroline quotes Brian Weiss’s masters again: “We also must learn not to just go to those people whose vibrations are the same as ours. The Council says we normally will just radiate to each other. You won’t have people in your life for a long time that don’t radiate where you are. If some people are growing more slowly, if they have more difficulties, their vibrations can’t reach yours and stay with you for a long time. You’ll automatically have people come into your life that match your vibration, that will help you with something, or that will push your buttons and make you crazy because you asked for this in spirit. The vibration of love is within all of us.
The vibration is just different
Caroline continues with the same quote: “It is normal to feel drawn to somebody who is on the same level that you are, but this is wrong. You must also go to those people whose vibrations are wrong with yours. This is the importance in helping these people.” The Council says it’s not that the vibration of these people is wrong because they don’t agree with you. Their vibration is just different and it’s in your life for you to decide how to deal with it.
Make choices that bring love into your life
Caroline asks, What’s the deal? Do we have to successfully do certain things in our lifetime? The Council says, No. It’s successful if you planned a certain life and you went through the list and did everything you wanted, which never happens because there’s always more and more you want. You’re just here to have fun and experience things. The #1 thing you’re here to do is to make choices that bring love into your life and this reality. When you can experience this love it grows and grows and everyone in your reality, whether you know them or not, feels this love and it will help them on their path.
There’s no unwanted karma that follows you from lifetime to lifetime
Caroline asks if karma is passed down through lifetimes? The Council says there isn’t any karma. If you believe there is, you’ll come up with a story and create something. If you don’t understand why something is happening, you think you must have done something in another life, and so you believe this is passed down. It’s not passed down. There is no karma that says you must pay for something or settle a debt. And yet there are many people who believe in karma because they need to believe it for how they planned to experience their current life. There is no karma that needs to be settled, cleaned out, or cleared before you can go on, or it will follow you from lifetime to lifetime.
It’s not karma if you choose, in spirit, to experience it
Caroline asks if bad things like the death of a child happen because of your karma. The Council says it doesn’t happen because of your karma. It happens because you’ve all chosen in spirit to experience this.
You can be, do, or have anything you desire
Caroline asks if asking for more in life is bad? The Council says never. We’re supposed to be here to ask for more and more and more, and to experience everything we can in this reality. We’re here to create as much as you want. We believe Abraham said you can be anything and have anything, and that’s why you’re here.
Lastly, Caroline asks if people who give up things like sex and choices get closer to source? The Council has a big laugh at this question and says, No, we don’t agree with that.
Caroline says I feel like all the answers to these questions is, no. The Council laughs again and tells Caroline she has all her answers.

The Fallacy of Karma
This post answers questions for The Council from an anonymous reader who recently lost a lot of money in the stock market, feels depressed, and doesn’t know how to deal with this situation. They feel there are four ways they can explain this loss. The first is that they lost the money due to karma from a past life because they didn’t cheat anyone in their current lifetime.
The Council says thinking about your loss in terms of karma is helping you deal with what’s going on, but this thinking isn’t correct because there isn’t any karma. There isn’t anything you need to pay back. There’s no force outside yourself that’s making sure you repay your karmic debt. The only person that feels they have to repay this debt is you. You’ve set it up this way for this lifetime until you come to know who you are. You lost money because of the choices you made, not because of a karmic debt that you were supposed to lose this money to make up for something that happened earlier in this life or a past life. The idea of karma is something you’re using as a tool to give you some understanding until you can experience the truth of the way your life truly is.
Anonymous says, The second way I’m thinking about the loss is that I’m paying back my karmic debt from a past life. I might have owed people the money in my past life so now I’m paying it back in my current lifetime. In other words, my soul enjoyed other people’s money in a previous lifetime and now I’m paying it back with this loss.
The Council says if you enjoyed other people’s money in a past life, that’s wonderful, but there’s still no karmic debt you have to pay back. You may have decided coming into your current life that you’ve had a lot of money in other lives and now you’re interested in living the other side of this coin. And as you grew up you heard what people believed about karma and you chose to believe this to make you feel better.
The Council says your belief in a karmic debt isn’t true, but it’s helping you deal with your stock market loss. This loss was due to your choices. There’s no other reason. How about taking the focus of your thoughts and thinking you don’t need to believe in karmic debt anymore? You don’t need to think there’s an outside force that’s making you lose this money. There’s no debt to repay. For the rest of my life I can go on, live it the way I want, make the choices I want, and know there’s nothing that’s forcing me to go into this thing we call karma and repay anybody.
The Council says you’re just having an experience so you can deal with something and then question it so you can learn and grow from this experience. Now you can change the way you operate in your life. Change your understanding and feel the relief that comes with knowing you don’t have to pay anybody back. There’s nothing to do and there’s no karmic debt.
Anonymous says, The third way I think about this loss is that I have to work through karma in this life before I die. So if I don’t pay this amount when I’m 43 years old, I need to pay it back when I’m older when it’ll be more difficult to digest and recover. It’s better it happened at a younger age. Is this thinking correct?
The Council says, no, this isn’t correct thinking. What’s good is now that you’re hearing this you can start playing with refocusing your thoughts. The nice thing about thinking your situation is karmic and that you have to repay this debt before you die is now that you’ve heard what we have to say, you’ll realize there isn’t any karmic debt. Play with this thought. There is no debt. I don’t have to repay anything. I’m fine if I die tomorrow and I’m fine if I die 20 years from now.
Anonymous says, The last way I think about my situation is had I been more savvy with my investments I’d have lost less money. The Council says you’re very smart to think this way, but this has nothing to do with karma. Anonymous continues, But if my karma was to lose that amount of money, and I was smarter to lose less, karma would have got back to me in another way to bring me the same sorrow to make back for the money shortfall. Examples would be an accident, injury, sickness, etc. So either way I’d have experienced the same sorrow. The Council says you’ll create this situation only if you believe it. There’s no accident waiting to happen. There’s nothing horrible that’s going to happen to you because of this karmic debt.
The Council says when you begin to change your thoughts you’ll be able to create acquiring more money. You’ll create new people in your life. Maybe you’ll create a better job. When you change your thoughts to being a free spirit and that you have control of your life and how you live it, you’ll begin to see an abundance of everything coming to you.
The Council says again that the karma this person believes in only exists because of their belief in it. It’s a tool to deal with the loss of money that occurred. This was set up before you came into this life so you could get to this point and then somehow you’d be able to find out this new information about how karma doesn’t exist. You wanted to experience that sort of thinking and then change your thinking and experience the relief and the change you can create in your life with the new thinking.

What’s the Purpose of Nazi Holocaust Victim’s Suffering?
This post answers questions for The Council from a reader named Juan, who asks if the spirits of the Nazi Holocaust victims were aware they agreed to be worked, tortured, and starved to death?
The Council says the spirits of Holocaust victims all volunteered to come into that lifetime to play those roles. They knew in spirit before they came there was going to be a mass crisis to teach millions of people what happens when you aren’t in the vibration of love.
The victims knew ahead of time it was going to be a difficult life, but they also knew that lifetime would create opportunities for learning for every soul who lived during that time. And the history that was made will be passed down to future generations who weren’t there to experience it.
Many spirits who where Holocaust victims held the light for everyone who was there. Many came to be with the children who were victims. These brave souls had no idea what they were going to face in that lifetime, but they knew they’d come through it with as much love and caring as possible.
Juan asks The Council, if the Holocaust victims agreed to the horrors they faced, what was the purpose of going through this? The Council says the purpose was to bring in more love and caring and to learn that no matter how bad things get, you have the choice how you’ll face your challenges. The victims found a way to feel love and take care of each other, and to believe more in something greater than themselves. And this lesson spread throughout the world.
Juan asks if the Holocaust was due to a karmic debt and The Council says there is no karmic debt. It was just souls that realized in this world that’s being created, what can we do to bring more love in?
Juan asks what possible benefit can come from the atrocities of the Holocaust? The Council says the benefit that we learn from the experience, never forget what happened, and learn you are so much more than what you think.
Juan’s last question is, what is the purpose of coming to this material dimension to suffer pain, anguish, and agony. The Council says we don’t come to Earth to suffer these things; we come to have a good time. And even though we go through horrible times, when we decided to go through this in spirit we weren’t afraid of it because we knew we’d be coming home to spirit again. This is something we’re going through to learn from. How will we help each other out while we’re here and what will we take back to spirit with us?
The Council closes by reminding us that you always come into the Earth reality with the thought that no matter what happens, I will find a way to show love and change the reality to a more loving one. What can I do to face these challenges? Will I remember who I really am as a spirit in a physical body? Will I choose joy and love? Will I be compassionate no matter what I’m going through? And when I bring more love into this reality, when my time there is over, I’ll have done what I set out to do.
Listen to our entire 12-minute session with The Council to hear all their guidance for Juan and the rest of us on the Holocaust, and let us know how you feel about it.
Choosing Two Abusive Marriages to Learn What You Want
This post is inspired by follow-up questions from Vacha who has been in an abusive marriage and has moved back to India with her parents. This is Vacha’s second marriage and both husbands were physically abusive.
The Council asks Vacha if there’s any question in her mind that she did the right thing when she left her husband. They imagine if you’re in an abusive situation, you’d feel comfortable that you had the power and the knowledge how to get out of this relationship.
Vacha asks The Council if she has any karmic accounts with her two husbands, and The Council says this in not the case.
The Council asks Vacha if she sees a pattern in why she chose these two abusive marriages. These have been lessons about awareness. The signs of abuse were there before each marriage. What has Vacha learned from these relationships? The Council says if Vacha doesn’t start asking herself this question, she will bring another abusive relationship. She has created this situation so she would learn about awareness, self-worth, courage, and how to create what you want.
Vacha asks if The Council sees her in a good relationship in the future. And The Council says she must do the work they describe if she wants a good relationship. Let go of the fear of what she’s experienced and let go of the question if there’s someone better for her. Focus on herself and find within the strength to believe she deserves better. Visualize a better life. Think of the abusiveness as a learning lesson and then let it go.
Vacha asks if there’s a chance she planned to have these abusive relationships before coming into this world, and The Council says definitely.
The Council says Vacha needed to fail in these two marriages in order to see what she wanted to learn. And she’s right on track; there’s nothing wrong here.
Listen to our entire 7-minute session with The Council (below) to hear all their guidance for Vacha and the rest of us, and let us know what you think.
Will My Upcoming Abortion Affect My 1-Year Old Son?
This post is inspired by questions from a reader named Tracy who’s about 2 months pregnant and scheduled to have an abortion the week after she posted her comment. After reading our post on Beth’s abortion she felt at ease, but has difficulty believing that karma won’t get her or her 1-year old son and asks about that. This will be Tracy’s third abortion and she asks if these souls have come back into her life. And she asks for advice on her spirituality, which she struggles with.
The Council starts by saying Tracy’s abortion won’t have a negative impact on her son. They say karma is what you believe and wish to create in your many lifetimes. They say there isn’t any monster karma that will make life miserable for her or her son, and ask Tracy to let go of the fear something in the future will affect them.
The Council says each of Tracy’s three abortions was pre-planned by her in spirit before she was born. They were created so she could learn about the gift of life and how wonderful it is to allow souls to come into this life and create the reality that soul chooses. And they ask Tracy what she has learned from each of these abortions.
The Council says these aborted souls have not returned to Tracy’s life, but have helped her understand her part in creating her son’s life. And they say she wants to understand the spirituality of becoming a parent and to be supportive of what her son creates rather than being a controlling mother.
The Council asks Tracy to meditate on the gift she and her son have given each other. And when she realizes she is a spirit helping another spirit move forward on his path she’ll experience great joy and love, not only for her son, but also for the souls she aborted.
The Council finishes by counseling Tracy to bring love into every situation and ask herself how she feels with each experience she creates. And they say to always ask for more understanding, more acceptance, and more allowing.
Listen to the entire 9-minute session (below) to receive all The Council’s guidance for Tracy.
Why Do Young People Get Cancer?
This post answers a question from a long-time follower of our blog named Susan, who also has her own WordPress blog: Life Is A Journey…Not A Guided Tour. Susan says she understands that diseases like cancer can be created from a lifetime of fear, but she wonders how someone very young can get cancer. She’s heard it can be to balance karmic energies or help another soul with a life lesson, and she asks The Council for their thoughts.
The Council says there’s a lot of talk about having to pay back karma or balance karma, and they say this isn’t the way karma works (unless that’s what you believe). They say it’s more like in one lifetime you experience good health and you see people who have poor health. And in another lifetime you wonder what it would be like to experience poor health and grow from this.
The Council wants to make clear that poor health is a conscious spiritual choice, not a punishment. They add that you sometimes choose poor health to help others deal with this, sometimes you choose poor health to learn compassion, and sometimes you choose poor health to become more loving and understanding.
While Susan seems to assume it takes a long lifetime of experiencing fear in order to develop cancer, The Council says you choose your family based on the experiences you desire. A child is able to experience fear while still in its mother’s womb and develop cancer within a very short period. Or it can plan to experience cancer because they want to leave this physical reality early, or to help the souls around them experience this. Whatever the case, The Council says it is always planned before coming into this physical reality.
The whole purpose of going through a life and death situation is to have the experience, to allow the souls around them to have the experience, and in some manner bring love into the situation.
The Council talks about what it’s like for a soul to choose cancer to help the other souls in it’s life learn from this. And then closes by saying when someone is experiencing poor health, the best thing you can do is send them love and remember they are spirit in a physical body choosing to experience this. And if they wish to live through this illness, you are supportive of this. And if they wish to leave this physical reality at this time, you’ll be supportive of this also.
Listen to the entire 18-minute session below to hear all The Council’s guidance on why young people might choose to get seriously ill.
Future Lives, Connecting with Famous ‘Dead’ People, & the Importance of the Present
This post describes part of a session with The Council inspired by a question from Jose about how the past, present, and future all happen at the same time. Topics addressed include:
- Jose’s question: Why does The Council sometimes refer to ‘past’ lives when they say at other times the past, the present, and the future are all happening at the same time?
- Future lives
- The connection all human beings have to the creative genius of any human being who has ever lived, and your ability to access this creativity.
- The importance of your ability to choose
- The importance of the present moment
- Karma
What is Karma and How Does it Work?
This post is inspired by a question from Oksana who was confused about the subject of karma and wanted to know what The Council has to say about it.
Council Comments on the Meaning of Karma
“We like this question very much – the subject of karma… how one’s thinking creates their own reality. For many centuries this idea of karma has been elusive. In the beginning it was thought that the deeds you do in this life, you would pay for in the afterlife, such as heaven if you did many good deeds, and hell if you did many bad, hurtful, horrible things – you would pay for it in the afterlife.
“And then it evolved that if you were truly bad enough in many of your lifetimes, you not only had to wait until you went back to non-physical, but you would begin to pay for it in the physical body.
“So again, you would experience many challenging situations in your life. And many people who, not understanding where this came from, would begin to think: This is my karma. I know I’m not a bad person now. I must be paying for it from another lifetime.
“And we can only tell you that you create your own reality. And by believing there is a judgmental God that will cast these horrible situations onto you – we are here to tell you this is not how it works.”

A Broken Sacred Contract and How to Move On
This post is inspired by a question for The Council from Chris who asks how to move on when someone she feels she was meant to spend her life with broke a sacred contract by leaving. She also asks if it’s possible to find another partner under the circumstances.
Sacred Contracts
The Council observes that souls frequently agree to come into physical bodies during the same lifetime and help each other in their physical lives, but the Council isn’t inclined to understand these agreements as binding sacred contracts, as implied by Chris’s question. The Council believes the idea of an unchangeable binding sacred contract goes against one of the most important principles in all of creation: the free will that all humans, all souls, all spirit is given by our creator to choose, in any moment, from an infinite variety of possibilities. The Council’s idea of a sacred contract is the agreement each soul makes to unconditionally love the part of itself that comes to experience life in a physical body.
